El Paso del Jaguar

"El Paso del Jaguar” in Costa Rica serves as a critical region for biodiversity conservation in the country. Situated within the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor, it acts as a crucial crossing point for migrating species, particularly felids such as the jaguar.

This area, renowned for its ecological significance, lies between the Central Volcanic Range and the Talamanca Range. However, the Jaguar Passage faces significant challenges due to habitat fragmentation and loss within the biological corridor, primarily driven by human activities such as deforestation and infrastructure development.

Additionally, the region has been negatively impacted by development projects like the construction of the Reventazón Hydroelectric Plant. To address these challenges, conservation and restoration measures are being implemented in the area. Projects like Territorio Jade aim to restore and protect natural habitats, promote connectivity between primary and secondary forests, and establish monitoring strategies to ensure the preservation of wildlife, including endangered species such as jaguars.
